My father Late Shri Mukund Keshav Dixit (1935-2015), the author of Dixitary, had always been an ardent reader and writer. As I picture him in my mind, I only see him surrounded by stacks of books, piles of papers and baskets of stationery. Books and newspapers around the house always had underlined words, highlighted phrases and handwritten notes on the side, showing that they were thoroughly and deeply read.
My father was also passionate about learning different languages. Growing up in Maharashtra, with Marathi as the first language, his exposure to spoken Hindi was very limited. With a determination of learning the national language, he started studying Hindi outside the school and completed many certifications. His father, Late Shri Keshav Jivaji Dixit was an expert and a renowned Sanskrut teacher. Under his expert guidance, my father mastered the language and earned the prestigious Shankarshet Scholarship. He then went on to choose Sanskrut as his college major.
His first job with the Government of India took him to Delhi, where Hindi was the main language. He made the most of this opportunity to improve his Hindi by interacting with locals, reading daily newspapers and rich literature.
He developed the habit of deeply studying various shades of interesting words that he came across and making notes about them. They were written in a handwriting so neat and beautiful that it was sure to behold the attention of the onlooker. More than 30 years must have gone by before these notes took the shape of a dictionary.
I once spoke to him about publishing his work online. Although he liked the idea, he wanted some more time to organize and complete it to his satisfaction. Unfortunately, that was not to be, as he suffered a major stroke in 2011, and was completely bedridden for the remaining four years of his life.
Pages of ‘Dixitary’ that were written decades ago had already started deteriorating, making many words hard to read. Lots of pages had also gone missing. I decided to digitize all this work with help from my family, and publish it on a website, before it suffered any more damage.
This labor of love took two years of reading these notes and typing the words one by one. This project has inspired me and my brother and sister to continue this work to fill up all the missing pages. We also plan to expand it to the best of our ability and maintain the same high standards of the original work. Publishing Dixitary is a moment of pride and pleasure for my family and a tribute to my beloved father.

दीक्षितरीचे लेखक व माझे वडील कै. श्री मुकुंद केशव दीक्षित, ह्यांना सखोल वाचन व लेखनाची अत्यंत आवड होती. पुस्तकांचे ढीग, कागदांचे गठ्ठे व स्टेशनरीच्या टोपल्या स्वतः भोवती मांडून बसलेले बाबा, असेच त्यांचे चित्र नेहमी माझ्या डोळ्यांसमोर येते. घरातील पुस्तकांवरचे व वर्तमानपत्रांवरचे रेखांकित शब्द, ठळक केलेली वाक्ये, व बाजूला हातानी लिहिलेल्या टिप्पण्या, अश्या अनेक खुणा त्यांचे अभ्यासपूर्वक वाचन झाले असल्याचे दर्शवीत असायच्या.
बाबांना वेगवेगळ्या भाषा शिकण्याचाही नाद होता. त्यांचे बालपण महाराष्ट्रांत गेल्यामुळे हिंदी बोलीभाषा फारशी कानावर पडली नाही. पण शाळेव्यतिरिक्त वेगळा अभ्यास करून व अनेक हिंदीच्या परीक्षा देऊन त्यांनी आपली राष्ट्रभाषा शिकण्याची इच्छा जिद्दीने पूर्ण केली. माझे आजोबा, कै. श्री केशव जिवाजी दीक्षित हे संस्कृत भाषेचे पंडित व सुप्रसिद्ध शिक्षक होते. त्यांच्या उत्कृष्ट मार्गदर्शनाखाली बाबांनी संस्कृत भाषेचा अभ्यास करून त्यात शंकरशेट शिष्यवृत्ती मिळविली. पुढे कॉलेजमधे उच्चशिक्षणासाठी त्यांनी संस्कृत हाच मुख्य विषय घेतला.
केंद्रसरकारच्या पहिल्या नोकरीतून त्यांची नेमणूक दिल्ली येथे झाली, जेथे हिंदी हीच प्रमुख भाषा होती. तेथे उपलब्ध हिंदी-साहित्याची पुस्तके व हिंदी वर्तमानपत्रे यांचे भरपूर वाचन करून बाबांनी हिंदी भाषेत अजून प्राविण्य मिळविले.
त्यांच्या वाचनात आलेल्या प्रत्येक नवीन शब्दाचा अर्थ व अर्थाच्या विविध छटा नोंद करून ठेवायची बाबांना सवय होती. ह्यातील प्रत्येक शब्द इतक्या सुरेख व वळणदार हस्ताक्षरांत लिहिलेला असायचा की बघणाऱ्याचे लक्ष हरपून जायचे. त्या शब्दसंग्रहाचे शब्दकोशांत रूपांतर व्हायला निदान ३० वर्षें तरी लागली असतील.
त्यांचे हे काम Internet वर प्रकाशित करण्यासाठी मी जेंव्हा त्यांना सुचविले, तेंव्हा त्यांना ही कल्पना आवडली. परंतु त्या आधी त्यांना हा शब्दकोश समाधानपूर्वक पूर्ण करण्यासाठी आणखीन थोडा वेळ हवा होता. पण दुर्दैवाने त्यांना पुरेसा वेळ मिळू शकला नाही आणि २०११ साली ते स्ट्रोक मुळे आजारी पडले. व त्यानंतरची चार वर्षे अंथरुणाला खिळूनच राहिले.
दशकांपूर्वी लिहिलेल्या दीक्षितरीची पाने आता बरीच जीर्ण झाल्याने अस्पष्ट होऊ लागली होती. त्यातील अनेक पाने निसटूनही गेली. आणखीन नुकसान व्हायच्या आत, परिवारातील इतर सदस्यांच्या मदतीने, मी त्यांचे हे काम लवकरांत लवकर ह्या संकेतस्थळावर टाकण्याचे ठरविले.
एक एक शब्द टाइप करून संपूर्ण शब्दकोश ह्या संकेतस्थळावर टाकायला दोन वर्षें लागली. ह्यापुढे मी, माझी बहीण व माझा भाऊ मिळून बाबांसारखेच अभ्यासपूर्वक व काटेकोरपणाने ह्या दीक्षितरीची गळलेली पाने भरून काढायचा व दीक्षितरी आणखीन मोठी करायचा प्रयत्न करीत राहू. दीक्षितरीचे प्रकाशन म्हणजे आम्हां सर्व कुटुंबियांसाठी एक अत्यंत अभिमानाचा व आनंदाचा क्षण असून माझ्या प्रिय बाबांना भावपूर्वक श्रद्धांजलि आहे.
