About The Author

This online publication of the dictionary is a tribute to my dear father, Late Shri. Mukund Keshav Dixit, the son of Late Shri. Keshav Jivaji Dixit who was a renowned Sanskrit scholar and a teacher in Sangli. My father inherited the legacy of profound Sanskrit knowledge and extraordinary penmanship from his father. He did his schooling from Bapat Bal Shikshan Mandir and City Highschool, Sangli. He went on to acquire his B.A. degree from S.P.College, Pune , majoring in Sanskrit. After completing B.A., he started studying L.L.B, alongside which, he appeared for the prestigious U.P.S.C. examination and joined the Central Govt. Service in Delhi. He retired from the coveted post of the Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission and chose to settle in Delhi.

He was an avid reader and had built up a vast treasure of notes, over the years, comprising anecdotes and a collection of good reads. This pile under his bed grew over the years as we did. This dictionary was one such gem in this treasure trove. He had a mastery over Sanskrit language and had won prestigious Shankarsheth Scholarship under the guidance of his father. He was also thoroughly read in English, Hindi and Marathi. He often surprised us with his knowledge of etymology of words, their shades of meanings, and their usage along with the suitable reference to the context. He had a fair knowledge of astrology, philosophy, spiritualism as well as ancient Indian scripts like the Modi script and the Kharoshtri (Prakrit) script. He always encouraged impeccable speaking and handwriting skills.

We, his children grew up referring to this dictionary, the thickness of which grew progressively over 30 odd years. Due to his sudden prolonged illness from the year 2011, he could neither complete it nor restore its dilapidated pages. It pained us to see this treasure perish after him. With the aim of bringing his work before the world, my younger sister, Uma (aka Urmila Mukund Dixit) undertook the responsibility of publishing his creation and I assisted her. The expert technical support of her husband, Rajesh, made the online transformation of this dictionary possible.

I feel, this dictionary is most apt for those who wish to capture the nuances of English language through their native tongue, Marathi. This dictionary is yet to reach completion, but we hope that the preservation of his mammoth task and its continuation brings peace to his soul.

शब्दकोशाचे हे ऑनलाईन रूपांतर माझ्या प्रिय वडिलांना दिलेली श्रद्धांजली होय. माझे वडील कै. श्री. मुकुंद केशव दीक्षित हे सांगली येथील संस्कृत विद्वान व शिक्षक कै. श्री. केशव जिवाजी दीक्षित यांचे सुपुत्र. त्यांना संस्कृत ज्ञानाचा व उत्कृष्ट हस्ताक्षराचा वारसा त्यांच्या वडिलांकडूनच मिळाला. सांगलीच्या बापट बाल शिक्षण मंदिर व सिटी हायस्कूल मधून त्यांचे शालेय शिक्षण झाले. नंतर पुणे येथील एस्. पी. कॉलेज मधून संस्कृत हा विषय घेऊन त्यांनी बी. ए. ची डिग्री घेतली. बी. ए. पूर्ण झाल्यावर त्यांनी एल्. एल्. बी. चा अभ्यास सुरु केला. एल्. एल्. बी. करता करता त्यांनी प्रतिष्ठित केंद्रीय लोकसेवा आयोग (यू. पी. एस्. सी.) ची परीक्षा दिली व दिल्ली येथे केंद्रीय सरकार ची नोकरी स्वीकारली. दिल्लीहूनच ते सचिव, केंद्रीय सतर्कता आयोग (सेक्रेटरी, सेन्ट्रल व्हिजिलन्स कमिशन) या सन्माननीय पदावरून निवृत्त झाले. निवृत्ती नंतर ते दिल्लीतच स्थायिक झाले.
बाबा एक उत्कंठित वाचक होते. ते वर्षानुवर्षे रंजक व वाचनीय गोष्टींचा संग्रह करीत होते. त्यांच्या पलंगाखालचा तो संग्रह आमच्या बरोबरच दिवसेंदिवस मोठा होत होता. हा शब्दकोश सुद्धा ह्याच खजिन्यातील एक हिरा होता. बाबांचे संस्कृत भाषेवर प्रभुत्व होते व आपल्या वडिलांच्या मार्गदर्शनाखाली त्यांनी प्रतिष्ठित शंकरशेठ शिष्यवृत्ति ही मिळविली होती. इंग्रजी, हिंदी व मराठी भाषेमध्ये सुद्धा त्यांचे अथांग वाचन होते. कोणत्याही शब्दाच्या व्युत्पत्तिपासून त्याचे निरनिराळॆ अर्थ व वाक्प्रचार, संदर्भासहित सांगून ते आम्हांस थक्क करीत असत. ज्योतिष्शास्त्र, तर्कशास्त्र, अध्यात्म व जुन्या भारतीय लिप्या - मोडी लिपी, खऱोष्ट्री लिपी - या सर्वांची पण त्यांना चांगली जाण होती. ते नेहमी कोणतीही भाषा अचूक पणे बोलण्यास व लिहिण्यास प्रोत्साहन देत.
आम्ही त्यांची मुले मोठी झालो ते ह्याच शब्दकोशाचा आधार घेत, जो तीस वर्षांपेक्षा अधिक काळापर्यंत वाढत गेला. त्यांच्या २०११च्या आकस्मिक, प्रदीर्घ आजारामुळे त्यांना हा शब्दकोश पूर्ण करणे व जीर्ण पानांचे नूतनीकरण करणे शक्य झाले नाही. त्यांच्या पश्चात त्यांचे हे वैभव वाया जावे हे आम्हांस सहन होत नव्हते. त्यांचे हे सत्कार्य जगासमोर आणण्याच्या हेतूने माझी धाकटी बहीण उमा (उर्फ उर्मिला मुकुंद दीक्षित) हिने त्यांचे कार्य पब्लिश करायची जवाबदारी उचलली व मी तिला शक्य तेवढे सहकार्य दिले. तिचे पती राजेश अभ्यंकर यांच्या तज्ञ तांत्रिक सहकार्यामुळे शब्दकोशाचे हे ऑनलाईन रूपांतर संभव झाले.
माझ्या मतानुसार, मराठी मातृभाषेतून इंग्रजी भाषेतील वैशिष्ट्ये टिपू इच्छिणाऱ्यांसाठी हा शब्दकोश अतिशय उपयोगी ठरेल. हा शब्दकोश अजून पूर्ण झालेला नाही, परंतु, बाबांनी सुरु केलेले हे मोठे कार्य सुरक्षित असून पुढे चालू राहणार आहे, हे बघून त्यांच्या आत्म्यास नक्कीच शांति मिळेल.
